Author's biography |
French still-life painter, active mainly in Strasbourg. He, like Louise Moillon, combined a Netherlandish tradition and technique with French classicism. He worked in Paris from 1621, returned to Strasbourg in 1641, but had been in Venice in 1629 and met Sandrart, whom he already knew.He painted in a spare, stiff, almost archaic style that has appealed greatly to modern taste - most of his paintings have come to light since the 1930s. The best collection is in the Mus閑 de l'Oeuvre de Notre Dame, Strasbourg. |
